Week 8
This week in the tutorial I presented only a limited amount of work, which received little to nothing feedback. He s
Exemplar - CCTV Building (Building Form)
The following CCTV Building in China, designed by OMA Architects, is representative and ideal for the design which I want to develop for my multi-arts complex. Specifically, I like the way that the structure is expressed, with naturally visible cross bracing along the external skin of the building. Additionally, the play with large scale and a continuous planned form over levels creates a picture of inspirational architecture. This is enhanced through its simple design, yet its strong presence and overwhelming stature allows it to take form as an iconic building.
I want to create a design which establishes a strong interplay of continuous form with a visible expressed structure.
Project Brief
The brief for this project is very relaxed. It has been assigned to us as individuals to formulate.
The aim of this project is to design a structure in the chosen site, Howard Smith Wharves, which;
- Is approximately 1000m2 in size
- Plays with scale of large proportions so as to define it as an iconic structure
- Has a close relationship with the site context
- Activates the site by creating a purpose and attracting users to the space
- Coordinates and further enhances the existing use of the space
- Effectively combines residential, commercial and recreational spaces together
- Has a defined relationship between public and private spaces
- Has a ferry terminal that allows public transport access to the site

Finalised Concept
Following on from the tutorial this week I began to establish a more resolved concept for my future building design. This would prove to be important as it would allow me to begin to create conceptual designs. Davor spoke about creating a place of retreat and safety which was an advancement on my protection idea. I felt this wasn't fully resolved and felt like it needed to be stronger and more established. Consequently, my concept has evolved further. My concept is about EXPRESSION which is derived from my association and understanding of the site.
Particularly the site is well sheltered and protected from the bridge above and the cliffs surrounding the space. As a user you quickly develop a sense of comfort and safety as the site inspires you to act naturally and therefore express yourself naturally. This concept is further derived from the elements within the site. The towering story bridge expresses itself a structure of strength and rigidity, coupled with the cliffs which express natural beauty and form.
This creates a effective linkage to the Mutli-Arts Centre - which allows users to express themselves through dance, art and music.
